With summer being in full swing I know many of you are probably spending more time outdoors. At least that is before it get too hot! Whether it be summer, winter, spring or fall being outside is always my go to for fun or a relaxing time. Several years ago I was going through the hardest time in my life and I found peace and comfort in the outdoors. I went for hikes, swims, or took my hammock out and just sat. It was a time I felt more connected to the world around me and started to feel whole again. I knew it did wonders for my mental health and over the years many clients have told me it does wonders for them as well.
There really is something behind being outside and all the benefits it offers. Being outside has cognitive benefits, such as increased memory, reducing stress, cognitive development, and attention restoration. Beyond cognitive benefits, the outdoors also offers emotional benefits. Those who spend at least some time outside shows signs of decreased depression, decreased anxiety, increased happiness and well-being, as well as an increase in sense of meaning and purpose to name a few.
You don't need to spend hours outside to get the benefits either! Just 5 minutes a day could make a difference. Some ideas for incorporating the outdoors into your life: go for a hike, walk your dog, read a book outside, bird watch, play a sport outside, go to the beach or lake, plant a garden, or go for a bike ride. The list is endless! Take full advantage of the beautiful weather and go play outdoors!
