Happy Pride Month!
June is Pride Month. Pride commemorates the Stonewall Riots that occurred in June of 1969 where members of the LBGTQ+ community fought back against harassment and brutality. Stonewall is considered a turning point in the gay rights movement. The first Pride March was held a year late in June 1970. Pride month is a time for the LGBTQ+ community to come together and express solidarity, as well as a time for advocacy and activism. Members of the LGBTQ+ community still face many challenges today.
Below is some statistics centered that you might find surprising:
9.3% of adults within the United States identify as LGBTQ+
22.7% of young adults within the United States identify as LGBTQ+
Of the 9.3% adults, 56% identify as Bisexual
Members of the LGBTQ+ community have a higher rate (almost 6x higher!) of Depression and Anxiety. They also experience a higher rate of Discrimination, PTSD, Suicidal Ideation, Suicide Attempts, and Substance Use.
Domestic Abuse is also higher within the community. 43.8% of Lesbians and 61.1% of Bisexual women experience DV and 26% of gay males and 37.3% of Bisexual males experience DV. 39% of Transgendered individuals experience DV.
